Abstract
This talk will provide an overview of an emerging program at the University of Queensland that draws together a team of legal and social science researchers in three ARC Centres of Excellence – Plant Success, Quantum Biotechnology, and Synthetic Biology. The research program explores new legal, policy, and regulatory issues that are arising from emerging biological research. The Program consists of two prongs – several targeted research projects and a series of cross-Centre activities.

Examples of the research projects include:

  • The development of responsible innovation frameworks tailored to cross-disciplinary sciences.
  • Patent landscapes for specific families of quantum technologies.
  • Network analyses of policies affecting the translation of emerging science and technologies.
  • Econometric analysis of gender and inventorship and qualitative studies of scientific collaborations.

Our cross-Centre activities consist of:

  • Regulatory, policy, and legal literacy training tailored to STEM researchers
  • The development of best practice guidelines around the management of research inputs (e.g., access and use of biological samples and materials) and outputs (e.g., inventorship in patents and authorship of articles)
  • Models for rethinking research translation and adoption for publicly funded research.

Bios
Dr Allison Fish is a senior lecturer in the Law School and a senior research fellow in the Centre for Policy Futures at the University of Queensland. She is a Chief Investigator on the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Biotechnology. Her research explores how technological infrastructures, legal forms, and social logics inform information and data management practices.

Brad ShermanDr Brad Sherman is an ARC Laureate Professor in the Law School at the University of Queensland. He is a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Success, and in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. His research focuses on the relationship between intellectual property and science and technology, with a particular emphasis on food, plants, and agriculture.
