Hologram Workshop: Explore the quantum properties of light

TIME: 10:00am

WHEN: 14 April, 2025

LOCATION: University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, Lab 211, Building 7 Parnell Building

TIMEZONE: AEST

We’re celebrating World Quantum Day as part of the International Year of Quantum 2025, and you’re invited!

Kids and their families are invited to come and explore the quantum properties of light at this fun, interactive workshop where you get to make your own hologram!

In this activity you’ll work together to make a 3D hologram which you will be able to take home! You will learn how the quantum properties of light allow these holograms to work through combining the concepts of interference and diffraction of light.

Date: Monday 14 April
Session 1: 10am – 10:45am – Book here
Session 2: 11am – 11:45am – Book here
Registration for this event is essential as spaces are limited. Max. 4 tickets per booking (1 adult, with up to 3 children).
This event is suitable for ages 6+ and all children must be accompanied by an adult
Location: University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, Lab 211, Building 7 Parnell (07-211). Enter through the Great Court at the Physics Building and follow the signs to Lab 211. Map.
Cost: Free.

What to bring and things to note:

  • Enclosed footwear. All participants must wear enclosed shoes (no Crocs, sandals, thongs).
  • No food or drink can be brought into the lab.

Following the workshop, you may like to take a tour of the UQ Physics Museum and see the famous Pitch Drop Experiment.

What is World Quantum Day?
World Quantum Day is an annual celebration promoting public awareness and understanding of quantum science and technology around the world.

What is International Year of Quantum 2025?
The UN has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). The mission of the International Year of Quantum is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life.

About QUBIC
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC) is the first national Centre globally at the interface of quantum and biological science. We aim to create a unique, vibrant, multidisciplinary environment for transformational, collaborative research at the very cutting edge.

The Centre has nodes at The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Wollongong and Flinders University.

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC) aims to pioneer paradigm-shifting quantum technologies to observe biological processes and transform our understanding of life.

We seek to drive fundamental knowledge and innovation across manufacturing, clean energy, agriculture, health and national security.

Our research program is developing quantum technologies that go far beyond what is possible today, from portable brain imagers to superfast single protein sensors.
