Leo Zhang

Dr Zhang was awarded his PhD in 2021 in molecular biology with a focus on the super-resolution imaging on organelles’ interaction in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. He joined the Institute for Biomedical Materials and Devices (IBMD) in 2021, and now he is a Lecture at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Dr Zhang is emerging as an international leader in bioimaging and function of organlles’ study using multidisciplinary methods, including single-molecule microscopy, whole-genome sequencing, and global transcription analysis (20 papers, ~ 1000 citations, H-index 10). He has published 20 journal publications, mostly in top-tier journals (Nature Methods, eLife, and Analytical Chemistry). In the year of 2020 to 2022, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and societal health needs, Dr Zhang led a research project to develop a rapid saliva point-of-care testing (POCT) device for COVID-19 diagnosis, capable of detecting the virus in asymptomatic patients. The success of this project was widely recognized and received media attention from notable outlets such as IMCRC reports, 7news, 9news, and UTS news. Moreover, it was effectively commercialized, further cementing its impact and contribution to the field. Dr Zhang has been invited to present at numerous international conferences, such as ASM2023, ICONN2024, and ASM2024. As co-CIs, he has led two National Grant, including an IMCRC Project ($1,472,719) and an iCare Grant ($250,000). According to his academic achievements, Dr Zhang was awarded the “Best New Invention” at the KCA Australasian Research Commercialization Awards, and the “Winner for the Science & Collaboration” at UTS in 2023.
